Recap of the AWC Panel at Equity Summit 2024

Pathways to Economic Stability for Older Workers

The American Workforce Coalition (AWC) hosted a crucial discussion at this year’s Summit, focusing on the intersection of workforce issues and the needs of older workers. This panel, moderated by Harold T. Fisher, broadcast journalist and host of “The Daily Drum” on WHUR 96.3 FM, highlighted the barriers faced by ethnic minorities, immigrants, and underserved communities in the evolving labor market, with expert speakers sharing valuable insights and solutions.

Key Highlights from the Panel

  1. The Growing Need to Support Older Workers
    • It’s projected that by 2028, 25% of the workforce will be aged 55 and older. Additionally, 28% of retirees are rejoining the workforce due to insufficient retirement funds.
    • Leaders from the AWC emphasized that effective policies and diverse support systems are essential to remove barriers that older adults, especially from immigrant and ethnic communities, face.
  2. Intersectional Challenges for Ethnic Minorities
    • Wayne Ho, CEO of the Chinese-American Planning Council, discussed the intersection of aging and immigration issues. His organization works to reduce language and cultural barriers that hinder access to public benefits and employment.
    • Maria Vasquez, president of Casa Innovation, noted that entrepreneurship is often born out of necessity in Latino communities. She highlighted the importance of shifting mindsets to foster both economic opportunity and rest, helping reduce work-related trauma.
  3. Challenges in Native American Communities
    • Chairperson Billy Tohee, CEO of the National Indian Council on Aging (NICOA), shared insights on the obstacles native communities face, including transportation, healthcare access, and systemic neglect. Tohee stressed that despite these challenges, many tribes are thriving through innovative programs, economic independence, and elder inclusion efforts.
  4. Solutions and Programs to Promote Workforce Participation
    • Ramsey Alwin, CEO of the National Council on Aging (NCOA), emphasized the importance of the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP). This federal program provides job training and placements for individuals 55+, boosting confidence, dignity, and financial stability for participants.

A Call for Empathy and Narrative Shifts

The conversation also underscored the need to change societal narratives around aging, work, and immigrant contributions. Panelists called for deeper empathy and understanding of individual histories, encouraging foundations, organizations, and policymakers to create spaces that truly reflect the lived realities of their communities.

Closing Thoughts: Moving Toward a Brighter Future

Despite the challenges, the panel ended on an optimistic note. Panelists shared stories of progress and collaboration, from the success of tribal enterprises to growing advocacy networks in Asian-American communities. They reminded us that creating inclusive workspaces requires all sectors—nonprofits, government, and businesses—to work in harmony.
