Insights from Equity Summit 2024 on workforce trends, AI, and the role of nonprofits
Our Equity Summit 2024 brought together thought leaders to explore key workforce trends, opportunities, and challenges. A highlight was a fireside chat between Gary A. Officer, Founder & CEO of CWI Labs, and Elaine Chao, the first Asian-American to hold a U.S. Cabinet position and former Secretary of both Transportation and Labor. She shared her insights on the rapidly evolving workforce and the intersection of technology, inclusion, and economic opportunity.
- The Acceleration of Workforce Change
Chao emphasized that today’s workforce changes are happening at a faster pace than ever before. In the early 2000s, topics like globalization, technology adoption, and diversity were just emerging. Today, those trends are more relevant and urgent:
- Globalization: Countries are shifting towards nationalism and onshoring.
- Technology: Workers must now master multiple platforms—beyond Excel, platforms like WeChat, WhatsApp, and TikTok are shaping communication even in professional settings.
- The rise of remote work and the gig economy has added new dimensions to workforce transformation, forcing companies to rethink hiring models and worker engagement.
- The Imperative of Continuous Learning
A recurring theme in Chao’s discussion was the importance of lifelong learning. Workers must continuously upgrade their skills, especially as automation and AI reshape industries. “It’s not just about learning; it’s about mastering new technology quickly,” Chao noted, emphasizing that adaptive learning will be the key to survival in a fast-moving economy.
Chao also urged employers, nonprofits, and governments to take responsibility for offering upskilling opportunities and ensuring that older and vulnerable workers can participate meaningfully in the workforce.
- The Evolving Role of Nonprofits in Workforce Inclusion
Chao praised the nonprofit sector’s role in bridging gaps between government, private industry, and underserved communities. As a former CEO of United Way of America, she highlighted how nonprofits are critical for:
- Providing training and mentorship opportunities.
- Facilitating collaboration between the public and private sectors.
- Offering support systems for vulnerable workers, including older adults and marginalized groups.
She stressed that nonprofits act as conveners and catalysts in the ecosystem, often translating the language of business and government to enable systemic change.
- AI’s Double-Edged Impact on Jobs
The challenge lies in closing the AI skill gap, which requires coordinated efforts from employers, nonprofits, and government programs to upskill displaced workers.
5. Tackling Ageism and Building an Inclusive Workforce
Chao spoke candidly about ageism and its harmful effects on mature workers. She encouraged companies to foster intergenerational exchange programs, promoting knowledge-sharing, and strengthening organizational resilience by leveraging the unique experiences and skills of all age groups. She advocated for corporate cultures that value adaptability, collaboration, and diversity across all generations.
“Employers have a responsibility to cultivate respect for all employees, regardless of age,” Chao emphasized. “They must build environments that welcome people at all career stages.”
Despite the challenges, Chao remains optimistic about the future. She believes in the “invincibility of the human spirit” and the power of community to overcome obstacles. For her, the future of work will require the combined efforts of the private sector, nonprofits, and government to create inclusive and resilient workplaces.
